Haringey Greyhounds

History

Part One

The Ice Rink at Alexandra Palace was opened in 1989, but it wasn't until the 1990/91 season that the funding was put in place to run ice hockey from the rink. For that season, the Haringey Racers were entered into the old English League Division One, with the Greyhounds entered into the all-British English League Division Three.

John Holtham, a junior with the original Racers, was appointed manager, and put together a squad that finished six out of eight teams in their inaugural season. Holtham's master stroke was the signing of Canadian Craig Oster who scored 33 goals in 11 games in the Racers' Autumn Trophy group despite their mid-table finish. However, Oster's North American style of hockey got him into trouble with referees early in the season, and he spent as much time off the ice as on it.

The Racers' form improved when Holtham signed a second import in Brent Bywater, and later Rick Strachan, who went on to have a distinguished career in British Hockey, including the captaincy of the Great Britain side. British players who also starred included Danny O'Hanlon and Phil Gosbee, as well as netminder Andy Nunn, who all finished with impressive stats. Other Racers who went on to play a significant part in the club's history were Simon Cruickshank, Rupert Thompson and a young forward by the name of Jan Bestic.

They finished the season with nine wins and one draw from 28 games. Top scorer was the gifted Oster with 66 goals and 68 assists from 32 games. Next in line were O'Hanlon (38+37), Strachan (22+30) and the veteran former Streatham defenceman Robin Andrew (11+29).

Meantime, the Greyhounds were coming in a respectable third in ED3, with 25 points from 20 games.
